How to Freeze Sausages Properly (Raw vs Cooked)

Sausages are the ultimate freezer standby, but if you toss them in haphazardly, you'll end up with an inseparable clump of meat. Whether you want to freeze sausages raw or cooked, separation is key.

Freezing Raw Sausages

Raw links often come in packages where they touch. If frozen like this, they fuse together.

  • Flash Freeze: Arrange links on a baking sheet not touching. Freeze for 1 hour until solid, then transfer to a bag.
  • The Twist: If freezing in the original package, you often have to thaw the whole pack. Flash freezing allows you to grab just one link later.

Can You Freeze Cooked Sausage?

Yes! In fact, cooked sausage patties or crumbled sausage freeze excellently.

  • Cooked Patties: Layer them with wax paper between each patty so they don't stick.
  • Reheating: You can microwave cooked sausage straight from frozen in about 60-90 seconds.

Safety Note

Sausage contains salt and spices which can accelerate rancidity in the fat.

  • Raw: Use within 2-3 months.
  • Cooked: Use within 2 months for best taste.
