Making your own baby food is healthier and cheaper than store-bought jars, but who has time to steam one carrot a day? The solution is to batch cook and freeze baby food.
Hygiene is Critical
Babies have sensitive immune systems.
Clean all jars and ice cube trays thoroughly (dishwasher or boiling water).
Don't dip a spoon that has been in a baby's mouth back into the batch you plan to freeze.
The Ice Cube Method
Standard ice cubes are the perfect portion size for babies (approx. 1 ounce).
Puree: Cook and blend your fruit, veggie, or meat.
Pour: Fill the tray.
Cover: Cover the tray with plastic wrap or a lid while freezing to protect from contamination.
Bag: Once frozen, pop cubes into a labeled freezer bag.
Storage Times for Baby Food
Vegetables/Fruits: 3 months.
Meats: 1-2 months.
Always thaw baby food in the refrigerator or warm water, never leave it on the counter. Always test the temperature before feeding!
